Private "M" Co, 349th Infantry, 87th Division; son of John Sutherland of Grand Forks; born at Grand Forks, ND Feb 18, 1894; entered service May 1, 1918 and trained at Camp Dodge, Iowa; overseas August 29, 1918; shortly after arrival overseas became ill with pneumonia and influenza and transferred to French-American hospital at Belfort, France, where he died from the effects of his affliction Oct 19, 1918. Private Sutherland is the second son of John Sutherland of Grand Forks to die in the military service during the Great War.
